Opioid Free Anaesthesia (OFA)

What is OFA?

Opioid-free anaesthesia or OFA is anaesthesia without the use of opioid drugs. Opioids are the drugs commonly used to control intraoperative and postoperative pain. It has been studied that in some cases patients can benefit from anaesthesia without these types of drugs.

The OFA is based on a deep knowledge of the mechanisms that are on the origin and transmission of pain. With a careful combination of drugs the hyponsis, analgesia and neuro-vegetative protection can be guaranteed.

In which cases the patient could benefit from OFA?

It is indicated in laparoscopic bariatric surgeries, patients with OSAS, oncological surgeries (ERAS program), in cases with an increased risk of cognitive dysfunction, with crhonic pain or risk of chronification and with addiction symptoms.

What benefits does the OFA provide?

Lower incidence of: nausea, vomiting, ileus, constipation, pruritus, urinary retention, drowsiness, respiratory depression, postoperative pain, cognitive impairment. A gradual awakening.

In conclusion, safety, comfort and shorter hospital stay.
